*Increases vascularity (circulation) -- Light Therapy stimulates the formation of new capillaries, replacing those damaged. New capillaries speed up the healing process by carrrying more oxygen as well as the nutrients needed for healing. They also carry away more waste products.
*Stimulates the production of collagen -- Collagen is the most common protein found in the body. It is the essential protein used to repair damaged tissue and to replace old tissue. Collagen is the substance that holds the cells together and has a high degree of elasticity. Increased collagen production results in less scar tissue formed at the damage site.
*Stimulates the release of adenosine tripohosphate (ATP) -- ATP is the major carrier of energy to all cells. Increases in ATP allow cells to accept nutrients faster and get rid of waste products faster by increasing the energy level in the cell. ATP provides the chemical energy that drives the chemical reaction in the cell.
*Increases lymphatic system activitiy -- Edema (swelling) can be relieved at a faster rate (doubled) with light therapy.
*Increases RNA and DNA synthesis -- This helps damaged cells to be replaced more promptly.
*Stimulates fibroblastic activity which aids in the repair process -- Fibroblasts are present in connective tissue and are responsible in forming collagen fibers.
